MD Novice Parent Information Letter
2011-12 North London Nationals Novice “MD” Team   Thank you for allowing your child to try-out for the 2011-12 North London Nationals Novice MD Team.

Please review this information carefully.  If required, these details may change as the process proceeds.

Competitive Hockey   Differences between Competitive and House-league:
 -          Try Out Process
 -          Play to win
 -          Fair ice time, not necessarily equal ice time
 -          Strength of competition

The 2011-12 North London Nationals Novice MD Team will be comprised of: -          15 skaters (9 forwards and 6 defensemen) -          2 goalies if available

All releases will be made after the second  tryout.  Players released from the Novice MD team will be asked to report to house league assessments on Monday, September 19th at Carling Arena .

Results of player selection/release will be posted on our team website: http://northlondonhockey.ca/Teams/1017/ after the second try-out session at 4pm.

Players that have not been released will be asked to report to the next try-out session listed above.  Please be aware that this is a very difficult time for your child so please prepare them for all outcomes.    The official team roster will be determined after Sept 17th tryout.

Tournaments/Exhibition   We intend on entering 5 tournaments in 2011.  Final confirmations are being achieved for: Ice Time   We will have 2-3 ice times per week plus any extra ice that may come available.   Costs   We will have a team budget of approximately:   $250 – North London Hockey Sponsorship Fee & North London Uniform $250 – Tournaments, Additional Ice & Training $500 - Total team cost per player   Add: $225 – bump up fee to North   Total cost per player: $725.   Please keep in mind: This $225 fee is required if your child makes the Competitive Team.  Note the $225 Bump-Up Fee is an additional cost paid to North London Hockey Association and is not part of team budget.   Please note that hockey has radically changed since you were young!  To be competitive, kids need to develop their skills.  The cost of developing these skills as well as tournaments and other playing expenses require a significant financial commitment.    Plans to obtain sponsorships and participate in fundraising activities are in progress and parents and players are expected to participate.  These fundraising initiatives will be parent organized.  These efforts could reduce the total cost per player; however parents/guardians must be prepared to pay the amount indicated above immediately after your child is picked.    A more detailed team budget will be provided to the team once the selection process is completed.  A draft budget is enclosed.             Player and Parent/Guardian Expectations   In order for a competitive hockey team to be successful, the full support and commitment of coaches, players and parents/guardians is required.  Outlined below are the expectations of the players and parents/guardians during the hockey season. Player Expectations:   Attend every practice and game.  If a player is unable to make a practice or game, the Head Coach must be notified ASAP.  Our team systems are built around each player contributing.  If your child does not attend practice, the team is affected. Most tournaments require your child to miss school (usually Friday) dependent on game times.  Arrive to practices at least 30 minutes in advance and games 45 minutes in advance.  Players MUST be dressed (helmets on) 10 minutes before game or practice time.  Practice preparation and pre-game strategy is extremely important.  Give 100% effort and focus to their team during practices and games.  If your child is misbehaving during practice, they will be sent to the dressing room to undress immediately.  If they are sent to the dressing room, they will not participate in the next game.  Bad behavior will NOT be tolerated.  On the first occasion, parents will be notified and standards will be set.  If there is constant distraction from your child, further discipline will be utilized, including suspension.  Hockey is a team game and when one is not focused, all are distracted.        Be respectful to teammates, coaches, other teams, parents, siblings and referees. Your child is required to dress on their own and parents are not allowed in the dressing room.  Skates will be tied by the coaching and management staff.    Parent/Guardian Expectations:   Provide funds and time commitment to allow your child to fully participate on the team. Reinforce player expectations with your child. Be positive and supportive of your child to assist in their development and increased confidence during practices and games. Be respectful of players, coaches, referees, and other parents/guardians. Participation in team initiatives.  We will require your assistance with team finances, management, fundraising, training, on-ice practices and a parent representative. If you have an issue with any team official, you will follow this resolution process: Wait 24 hours. Contact the parent representative. If this does not resolve your issue, a meeting will be scheduled with the team official involved. If the issue is not resolved, North London Executive will be contacted by the parent representative for mediation.   Coaching Philosophy & Goals   For those parents that don’t know me, you will find that I am passionate about developing your child in hockey, in character and in life.  I believe in playing to win.  Winning involves winning the race to the puck, winning face-offs, winning the battle for the puck and having a winning attitude.  Our team will compete in all games.  I have a line-up of tournaments that I feel will challenge and reward their effort.      We will incorporate team strategy around your child’s talent and ability to comprehend systems.  They will have a lot of skill development through repetition.  We cannot compete unless we have base skills.  Through high-octane practices we will develop strength and endurance.  I will ask for parental assistance at home in further developing strength and skills.   I recognize the importance of family in the sport and the commitment that parents and siblings make toward the team.  This does not go un-noticed.  We want to involved them in the season as much as possible but please be aware that they cannot be in the dressing room.             Additional Information:   Ice time, or playing time, will be fair but not necessarily equal.  At all times I will try to balance the ice time keeping in mind that at certain times during games and during the year (for example tournaments/playoffs, important games) I will exercise my best judgment in having the right players on the ice.  Early in the season I will try to use players in all situations to ensure they gain valuable experience.  Skills are developed and I will be giving each player the opportunity to grow in skill and experience as play dictates.   I would ask that you please review the information in this letter and also take the time to explain to your child that at times ice time may vary as per the fair not equal guidelines.    Should you decide that the NOVICE MD Team would not be a good fit for your child, due to the level of time commitment, financial commitment, or for any other reason, please let me know before I pick the team.  Otherwise, I assume you understand the information provided.   If anyone has any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Our team goals:
-          Player Development
-          Skill Improvement
-          Win 60% of our games.
-          Win a Tournament.

DREAM BIG, PLAY HARD, ACHIEVE Coming together is a beginning.
 Keeping together is progress.
 Working together is success.
