Tryout Information (North London Nationals Hockey)

PrintTryout Information

  • Tryouts are held to select players for all Minor Development teams.  The time, location and cost are posted on the NLSA website.
  • If there are enough interested, skilled players registered for tryouts in a division to field two teams, NLSA will run a second team.
  • Minor Novice will not have a tryout, instead all players will be assessed.
  • Each player attending tryouts will be charged a fee for ice time. This fee, approved by the board, is designed to offset the cost of tryouts.  By charging the tryout fee, costs are shared among players trying out rather than all the minor hockey players in North London.
  • Deadline for MD Tryout registration is August 31st. Tryouts traditionally start in early September.  Each team may participate in inter-squad and exhibition games.  One of the purposes of these games is to permit coaches to see the players competing against other players from the same age level.  Players that pay a tryout fee are guaranteed two skates or two hours of ice participation in MD tryout.
  • Minor Development teams shall have until their respective signing dates (as set by NLSA) to declare their teams on a roster sheet.  All Minor Development players signing cards and/or a roster sheet for the first time will need proof of age.
  • In the event a player in injured and is unable to attend tryouts as a result, he or she must provide the NLSA with a doctor’s note verifying the injury and their inability to attend tryouts. In the event such a note is provided, that player will remain on their current team. For example, an injured Novice MD player would automatically be placed on the Minor Atom MD team in the event they were not able to attend tryouts for medical reasons.
  • Players and goalies (Novice to Minor Midget) will be emailed a Unique ID # after the August 31st registration deadline.
  • Players/Goalies will be notified of their tryout status, with-in 6 hours after each tryout session, via the NLSA website, parents will use the players Unique ID # to identify their child
  • For any tryout starting after 6:30pm Players/Goalies will be notified of their tryout status, via the NLSA website by 10:30am the following morning. Parents will use the player’s Unique ID# to identify their child.
  • Coaches selected for NLSA Minor Development teams endeavour to make all the right decisions.  However, they are not infallible.  Coaches will select players based on the needs of the team and the individual player’s ability, attitude, physical and mental potential.  They will endeavour to teach all players individual and team skills, tactics, self-discipline and good sportsmanship.
  • Coaches are instructed to always use the NLSA website for mass communications during tryouts.
  • If a player/parent wishes to discuss their individual evaluation the request to do so must come after 24 hours of the final tryout for the age group. The objective of such requests should be to obtain feedback regarding on-ice performance for the purpose of facilitating player improvement.
