House League Assessments and Team Selection 2017

It is almost that time again!

Hockey is right around the corner and we are changing the way we start the year in House League.

Beginning this September, there will be no on ice assessments for Minor Atom and older players.

Over the last few years one of the biggest questions and concerns from our participants and parents comes from balancing of our house league teams.

There are a number of reasons and factors as to why teams can seem unbalanced or the process seems flawed. Without understanding the complete picture of a team and their make up or their draft process or any number of factors that come into play it is easy to say that they are not balanced.

The overall balancing is a difficult process to say the least as we to try and satisfy all of the requests. As an organization we do our best to follow our guidelines however there are always a number of items that come up during the draft. From team conflicts, coach’s requests, player and coaches days of the week requests, player carpooling requests etc combined with the rankings for each player that come into play while we try and balance the teams. As it is House League hockey, we do try our best to ensure that it is great experience for all of our players.

In our best effort to try and balance our teams as well as take some stress off the players this year, we enlisted the help last February of our North HL coaches in ranking their player in mid-season form. We are happy to say we had over 80 percent of our coaches’ fill in these forms. These rankings will be used this year to accomplish an initial draft. This will forgo the need for an assessment skate this year for players from Minor Atom divisions and older.

Teams will be selected by the coaches on paper and then will play some balancing games towards the end of September. Dates will be announced shortly. These games will be used to try and help the balancing process through a collaborative effort of each of our coaches in each division during these games. Without the assessment skates, additional games can be used if required to balance the teams as best as the coaches can.

I look forward to these new processes to our balancing that were made to address some of the concerns and hopefully help everyone to have a terrific year on the ice.

Note: Novice divisions will still require some on ice evaluations due to the fact a lot of them have never played and their development can change significantly in one year.
