HL Assessments & Team Selection (North London Nationals Hockey)

PrintHL Assessments & Team Selection

The North London Sports Association (NLSA) always strives to provide fair and equal evaluation for all participants using our own volunteers. Our volunteers have a wealth of knowledge and understanding of hockey, the association and its participants. The evaluation process is constantly being refined and updated based on feedback from the players, parents and the association’s volunteers.

Evaluation for Minor Novice and Novice start in late
September, check the HL Evaluation schedule on the website.  There will be no on-ice evaluations for Minor Atom and older players as we will use evaluations completed at the end of last season.

There are a number of reasons and factors as to why teams can seem unbalanced or the process seems flawed. Without understanding the complete picture of a team and their make up or their draft process or any number of factors that come into play it is easy to say that they are not balanced.

The overall balancing is a difficult process to say the least as we to try and satisfy all of the requests. As an organization we do our best to follow our guidelines however there are always a number of items that come up during the draft. From team conflicts, coach’s requests, player and coaches days of the week requests, player carpooling requests etc combined with the rankings for each player that come into play while we try and balance the teams. As it is House League hockey, we do try our best to ensure that it is great experience for all of our players.

Teams will be selected by the coaches on paper and then will play some balancing games towards the end of September. Dates will be announced shortly. These games will be used to try and help the balancing process through a collaborative effort of each of our coaches in each division during these games. Without the evaluation skates, additional games can be used if required to balance the teams as best as the coaches can.

It is critical to remember that balanced teams on paper will not always translate to equal skilled players.  This is due to many factors such as:

  1. The uneven progression in skill level especially for younger players.
  2. The beneficial effect of the additional skating and competitive games for players who are part of the Select program.
  3. The wide range of abilities of various players in the goaltending position.
  4. The participation in additional skill level programs by some house league players.

As a result of this review, teams may be required to reassign players within a division.  Consequently, any player may be reassigned in order to make all teams in the division balanced (regardless of friend or coach requests).  Convenors are aware that it can be difficult for a player to move to another team, and thus do their best to keep reassigning players to a minimum.  Cooperation and support from players, parents and coaches are nevertheless both necessary and appreciated.
